Current Favorites: January 2016

Micellar water is sort of new to the beauty scene. Different then an oil based makeup remover, micellar water cleanses the skin without leaving any sort of residue. I picked up the twin pack of Bioderma when I visited France and it has become my go-to makeup remover just because it is so gentle on the skin. A lot of other brands are catching onto the micellar water trend so thankfully, it is becoming more accessible in the states (Garnier and Simple).

I am a huge fan of Chanel foundations but am not willing to drop the money on them right now. Bourjois is apparently owned by Chanel, which is why some say there foundations are a bit similar. The healthy mix foundation is the only Bourjois one I picked up at Superdrug and I am very impressed with it. The texture is nice and smooth - not too thick! I would say it's a medium coverage and it lasts really well on the skin throughout the day.

Redken Wax Blast 10
As I am a girl with very thin and straight hair, I am always frustrated with its inability to have any sort of texture. I was complaining about this to my stylist and she recommended this product to me. The Redken wax blast is exactly as it sounds. It's a nice smelling spray wax that just kind of roughs up my hair a bit. I am a huge fan of it at the moment and I feel like it's a better alternative to the sea salt sprays that can sometimes dry out your hair and leave it feeling a bit crunchy.

Lime Crime Velvetine "Cashmere"
Liquid lipsticks are the new thing right now. I am not a fan of them for everyday wear but the shade of this one is definitely noteworthy. Cashmere is a very cool-toned, almost lavender-grey shade. Definitely not for everyone but I am a big fan when worn with the right look.

Lancôme Hypnôse Drama mascara
Nothing much to say about this other than the fact that it has been my go-to mascara for the past couple months. It holds curl really well and gives my short lashes lots of volume, which I think has something to do with the oddly curved wand that just works so well.

Bourjois bronzing powder
Another bronzer that smells like chocolate! I also picked this up at Superdrug when I was in London and I think it's a great alternative to the Too Faced Chocolate Soleil bronzer. It blends well and is a nice matte shade that isn't too orange.

Hope you enjoyed the beauty catch-up! Talk to you soon.

Making Smart Purchases: High-End Beauty Products

As the savvy woman I am, I wanted to write a post on how to stretch your dollar when purchasing high-end beauty products. I definitely have my drugstore favorites, but there are just certain products I prefer to buy high-end. Being conscious of my student budget, I have to make smart purchases. Therefore, I am sharing some tips on how to be a smart shopper when filling up your make-up bag.

Invest in the larger size
Stores like Costco are based on this concept. When you buy the bigger size, you are getting more for your money. I typically go high-end for my simple, everyday products. For something that I am going to be using often, it pays more to buy the bigger size. My favorite example of this is with my favorite self tanner, the St. Tropez bronzing mousse. The 4 oz. bottle is priced at $32 while the 8 oz. bottle costs $42. So for $10 more, you can double the amount of product you will get. Therefore, you get more product up front and save more in the long run.

Switch to an eyeshadow palette system
The best way to purchase high-end shadows is to go with a palette system. Pre-made palettes are great for beginners because the shades are already put together in one place. The only thing is, there are always one or two shades in a palette that you just don't really use or you run out of your favorite shade that can't be refilled without purchasing an entirely new palette. One you have an idea of what shades you like, it is best to stick with a palette system because you can customize the shades you want and you can always replace single colors in the palette. MAC is the system I stick with and individual eyeshadow pans cost around $10. That seems expensive but for high end quality it really is an inexpensive option.

Buy translucent loose powder
Not only do I love the finish of loose powder, but buying translucent powder makes it versatile as you can use it on any skin tone. I have the Laura Mercier loose translucent powder which comes with 1 oz of product. As most powders come with around .35 oz of product, you can imagine how long this powder has lasted me. I am nearing the end of mine after two years and I just removed the sifter to make sure I get all the product out of the container.

Try rollerball perfumes
Perfumes are pretty pricey. I love testing different ones out and the pretty bottles are always so appealing. However, I have just recently started to utilize rollerball perfumes. If you are one to always try out different scents, rollerball perfumes are a great way to do so. Costing significantly less than the full bottles, you don't have to feel bad about having different ones to choose from. Especially because I don't end up wearing too much perfume at a time, they can really go a long way. However, if you have that signature scent that you wear every single day, it is definitely better to invest in the full size bottle to really get your moneys worth of product.

Pay attention to the product amount
I like to look at buying high-end makeup as more of an investment. I am investing in better quality products that I think perform better. As with any investment, you need to do your research, keeping what you want the product to do in mind. For the longest time, I was buying the Benefit Triple Performing Facial Emulsion as my everyday moisturizer. It really is a lovely product, but I felt like I was buying it pretty frequently and I wasn't even using it at night because of the SPF. After perusing around Sephora, I found the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Lotion which comes with 8 oz of product opposed to 1.7 oz of the Benefit one. Yes the product is different, but it is the versatile, simple moisturizer I was looking for that will last me a lot longer.

Of course, I sometimes splurge on a product without keeping all of these things in mind. But for products I re-purchase and use consistently, I like to shop according to these tips! Hopefully this helps you out a bit. Thanks for reading.

Lipsticks of the moment

I'm not sure what it is but there is just something so nice about getting a new lipstick. I recently picked up a couple so I thought I would make a quick post about some of my favorite lipstick shades of the moment. From top to bottom pictured is: Lady Danger by MAC, Anna from the NARS Audacious Lipstick range, and Cherish by MAC. Lady Danger is a beautiful, rich red with orange undertones. That is what makes this one so special - the orange undertones make it something different in my collection and I can't wait to wear it this summer. Lady Danger is a matte finish in the MAC range so it is rich in pigment but I don't find it as drying as other matte lipsticks. Anna is a deep pink shade with purple undertones. The finish is more of a satin and it looks really nice over Whirl lipliner, one of my other favorites. Cherish is a darker nude shade, nowhere near the intensity of Myth. The pigmentation isn't quite as strong as the others but it is easily build-able and gives me the perfect nude lips! I will try and wear these in future outfit posts so you can see how they wear. That's all for now!

Just Some Favorites

Just thought I would take an entire post to lay out what I have been enjoying lately, material objects that is. Just a post entirely dedicated to the discussion of rompers, stacked bracelets, and beauty products. Hold on to your seats, this is important stuff.

The first topic to go over is the glorious clothing item called a romper. Some call them playsuits, some call them rompers. For now, let's just refer to it as a romper. The great thing about a piece like this is that you can make an entire ensemble with just one item of clothing. As you know, I like to complicate things so I opted to tie a cardigan around my waste and add a hat. This particular romper is from Urban Outfitters and I just love the quarter length bell sleeves. The polka dot print is pretty cute too, huh? The cardigan is All Saints (thrifted) and the hat is from H&M.

All right, the next topic up for discussion regards the lovely stack I have been wearing on my wrist. I have already mentioned my beloved Daniel Wellington watch in my last post and I think I am wearing an Alex & Ani bracelet in almost all of my outfit photos. The new item to my collection is the leather and Swarovski crystal bracelet from Noma Los Angeles. I particularly like the gunmetal shade of crystals as it's a shade I am not typically attracted to. Definitely make sure to check out their site as you will be happy to find a huge sale going on!

Every now and then, I like to give a quick run down of the beauty products that have really stood out to me lately. First thing on the list is the Prada Candy perfume. Now, describing scents is a skill I don't have so all I can tell you about this particular perfume is that is smells really sweet, but a little more mature than something like Pink Sugar. I love it. As for more things that make me smell nice, I have been loving my "It's Raining Men" shower gel from Lush. If you didn't know, this shower gel is the same scent as the "Honey I Washed the Kids" soap just in gel form! The nineties lip is still in and I have been rocking the look with MAC Twig lipstick. The color is classic and extremely wearable, pictured on my lips in the last photo. The Laura Mercier translucent loose powder has been my favorite lately. Out of all the powders I have ever used, I find this gives my skin a smooth, natural finish while still keeping the shine away.

Hope you all enjoyed. Look out for a true outfit post coming soon.

Cleansing with oil?

Oil cleansers always seems a little contradictory to me. I mean, you typically cleanse your skin to remove the oil your skin has built up so the concept of using oil to remove oil seemed a little odd. I am always dabbling into new skin care products and I have now developed a decent understanding of cleansing oils. I stuck with some lower end options, but both higher and lower end brands offer similar products. The two I tried were from The Body Shop and Garnier. Both look and feel like an oil, but they smell lovely and lather up slightly when you rub the oil between your hands. The oil consistency really helps remove all the makeup on your skin and I even use it gently to remove my eye makeup, including my waterproof eyeliner. From what I have gathered, cleansing oil is just a very nourishing alternative to cleansing. It cleanses your skin and leaves your skin supple once you're done. I still like to do a quick wash with a normal gel cleanser once I finish with this, because it does leave an oil residue on my skin after. Because of that, it does seem like just an extra, unnecessary step sometimes. But when my skin feels irritated or dry, it is nice to remove my makeup with something more nourishing opposed to just using a gel cleanser or makeup remover. I think cleansing oil is great for the winter months or for anyone who experiences dry skin - it will clean your skin while the oil puts moisture back into your skin. I recommend both the Garnier Nourishing Cleansing Oil and The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil. Both are great quality and affordable, especially if cleansing oil is new to your skincare regimen.
I am still very much a beauty product junkie, so I am definitely making a mental note to write more of these types of posts.
Hope you enjoyed.

Repurchased Beauty Items No. 2

This will be my second post in the "Repurchased" series. If you missed the last one and want a little briefing of what exactly I am discussing, check out "Repurchased Beauty Items No. 1" here.

The first product I would like to discuss is the Too Faced Milk Chocolate Soleil bronzer, emphasis on the shade Milk Chocolate. This has been my go-to bronzer for a while now, more preferable than NARS Laguna and Benefit Hoola in my opinion. This bronzer is matte; I much prefer matte bronzers opposed to ones with shimmer. Another preferable quality is the consistency of this bronzer - it is so easy to blend and is the least bit "muddy".  However, the real reason why I claim such love for this product is because Too Faced took us pale girls into account when creating  a "Milk Chocolate" shade in the range. For pale skin tones, bronzer can sometimes be too difficult to wear everyday. Since purchasing this, I have not gone a day without adding some subtle definition to my face. The Milk Chocolate shade is perfect for paler skin tones because it is not as dramatic of a contrast than others. I also think this would be a nice bronzer for newbies to the contouring world. With the lighter shade, you can get just as nice definition, it is just more fool-proof. Did I also mention this bronzer actually smells like chocolate?

Next, I would like to proclaim my love for the Anastasia Brow Wiz. I know I sound dramatic over here, but seriously this brow pencil has changed my eyebrows indefinitely. I actually had the pleasure of getting my eyebrows done by Anastasia Soare this past spring and she had used the brow wiz along with an excellent brow shaping to transform my face. Your eyebrows truly do frame the face so I think it is important to give them some definition and make them stand out a bit. Because the brow wiz has such a thin point, I find I am able to mimic actual hairs when I am filling them in and I am able to go around the edges to give them more natural definition.

The last product I am not going to take too much time to explain because I am sure I have previously raved about it in multiple posts. To sum it up, Jack Black's Intense Therapy Lip Balm is one of my favorite lip products ever. It technically is men's lip balm but I have been using it for years. The consistency is so smooth and leaves my lips moisturized and soft. My favorites are the Black Tea & Blackberry, Shea Butter & Vitamin E, and the Mango & Mandarin scents. These have been a favorite of mine for years and I cannot recommend them enough.

These products truly do hold a special place in my make-up bag. Hope you enjoyed.

'Tis The Summer Season

Short and sweet, I am going to do a run down of my beauty product picks for the summer. Fake tan, highlighter, and lots of moisture, it's definitely summer time. These are all products I love year round, but I find are especially good for use in the warmer months.

St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse
Being a pale person, it is extremely difficult to obtain a summer tan without getting the fateful lobster look. Not to mention, it's not even a question about how important it is to protect your skin in the sun these days. I am an avid sunscreen wearer and I like to obtain my tan overnight in my bed…while my fake tan develops. I have tried so many self tanners over the years and this is the best one I have come across thus far. The mousse texture easily blends and the slight green color prevents any resemblance of an Oompa Loompa. I got through high school watching every girl show up the day before a school dance orange; I am way too familiar with that look not to know better.

Origins Drink Up 10 Minute Mask
I find my skin gets a little dehydrated during the summer due to my exposure to the sun. I like to replenish my skin at night, and this is the perfect product to do so. It has a nice smell and nourishes skin that has been dried out in the sun. Origins also does a intensive overnight mask, which I have also tried. Truth be told, both masks feel and smell the same.

Macadamia Deep Repair Masque
Just like my skin, I like to keep my hair nourished in the summer as well. This is my all time favorite hair mask; again, a product I love year round but especially love in the summer. The stuff just smells so good and it really does put the moisture back into your hair. Because my hair is extremely thin, I get away with doing this about once a week strictly on my ends. Depending on your hair type, this stuff could potentially cause build up in your hair. It is pretty pricey as well, which is even more of a reason to keep it as that special treatment product for when your hair is feeling a little dry and brittle.

Dior Poudre Shimmer Amber Diamond
Highlighter is a product I always break out in the summer. I think everyones goal is to have that dewy, sun kissed glow and this product does just that. The strip of colors range from all shades of gold and when swirled together and applied, you end up with the most perfect golden glow on the skin. Not only is this my favorite highlighter, but you can just as easily blend the colors on your eyes for some shimmer on the lid or tear duct.

Benefit Girl Meets Pearl
This is another product that helps you obtain that dewy glow, however, I find this highlighter to be much more subtle and natural. Perhaps it's because it is a liquid highlighter, but when blended into your skin you will get this subtle cool glow that reflects when the light hits it a certain way. It will not be obvious that you are wearing highlighter, but it will definitely make someone impressed with the appearance of your skin. I prefer to put this on top of my powder to tone down the matte look and bring some life back into my skin.

Beauty Blender Sponge
The Beauty Blender is one of my favorite ways to apply liquid foundation. It takes more time, but I find it blends everything into the skin so well it looks airbrushed. Because it works better being damp, it provides an instant cooling sensation on the skin. It makes anything you put on look flawless, but still natural. If you are in a hot climate, the Beauty Blender provides the perfect make-up application while also giving off a cooling sensation at the same time. What's not to love here?

Well there you have it, my top beauty product picks for the summer. Hope you enjoyed! I give you two thumbs up if you made it to the end. Even my mom looks, but never reads.

The Balm Squad

So this post is going to be entirely about lip balm. Irrelevant to some, but of the utmost importance to us lip balm addicts. Being my most essential beauty product, I am going to give you a run down of my favorites. Eyyy get it? The "balm squad". Hah.
~
Let's get down to business…

My very first favorite is the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment, with SPF 15. This baby retails for $22, but it is well worth it in my opinion. The reason why I think this lip balm is so unique is due to its thick, creamy texture. This is one of the most moisturizing treatments I have ever found. With a citrus smell and added SPF, I don't see how you can go wrong here. Fresh does offer tinted versions of this (I have tried the Honey shade), but for the money I think it is better to just go for the standard original.

My next go-to balms are the Korres Lip Butters, which are fairly hyped items on the market---well deserved hype, of course. Whilst these are smooth and moisturizing, I love these for their ability to add moisture with a tint of color. Korres offers a wide range of colors, of which I have Jasmine and Plum. Jasmine is the coveted nude-pink and Plum is the darker berry shade.

If I had to put one of these on the top of my list, that spot would have to go to the Jack Black Lip Balms. These are my absolute favorite--they moisturize my lips so well, they have the best range of scents, and they contain SPF 25. My favorite scents (or flavors?) are the Black Tea & Blackberry and the Shea Butter & Vitamin E. For a whopping $7.50, these are my must-haves that never seem to fail.

Last, but not least, I would like to mention Smith's Rosebud Salve. This is probably the most trusted, multi-purpose lip balm that is commonly found in my backpack and purse. I constantly repurchase this product for its ability to moisturize my lips while adding a nice gloss. If I want to add a gloss to any lipstick I just pat a little bit of this stuff on to the center of my lips. This is also my go to cuticle moisturizer and make-up artists even use this to add shine to eyelids for a more editorial look. You just can't go wrong with this stuff.

If your generic Chapstick is just not doing the job anymore, I recommend checking any of these out. Hope you enjoyed!

Featured: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eye Liner

So for my second "featured" post, I am going to be reviewing my absolute favorite liquid eye liner: the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner. Throughout the years, I have tried and tested so many different eye liners, and this is the one I have settled on for the past year.
For everyday, I like to line my upper lash line, often flicking it out. I first used gel eyeliner, then I dabbed into sponge tip liners (like Lancome Artliner), then I started trying out the felt tip pen liners. So many brands make eyeliners like this, but I can honestly say that this one is my favorite. One of the most difficult qualities of felt tip eye liners is their tendency to dry out quickly. I am about to sound very technical, but with pen eyeliners like these, it is necessary for them to have that little ball in the product that helps bring the product to the tip. Yes, it does help storing this upside down, but the ball does really help ensure a smooth application. I have tried various versions of this eyeliner, and because they do not have the ball to bring up the product, they dry out quickly. If you have no idea what I am talking about when I say "ball", it's when you shake the product and you can hear something rattling around in the pen.
The tip of this brush is very thin and precise, so you can make a thick or thin line. The formula of the eyeliner is the best: it lasts all day, it's waterproof but not too difficult to remove, doesn't smudge easily, and the finish isn't too matte or too shiny. For me personally, this eyeliner is the easiest to apply and is so easy for travel. It retails for $20, but you can definitely get a lot of use out of it, especially if you store the pen upside down.

Featured: the Clarisonic Mia

This will be my first "Featured" post on my blog. Basically, I am going to start doing spot features on certain products I think deserve their own post. To start off this series, I am featuring my Clarisonic Mia.

What is the Clarisonic?
If you have not heard of this skincare revelation, it is a skin cleansing brush that will get a deeper clean than any old cleanser does on its own. I have had my Clarisonic for almost 2 years now, and since using it, my breakouts have diminished and only appear after those fateful nights of not washing off my makeup. Now, the Clarisonic does not claim it will completely clear up your breakouts. Through my early teens, I struggled with acne and was even put on a prescription to help clear up my skin. After a full year of using my Clarisonic, my skin was, for the most part, breakout free. Having not had switched up my cleanser throughout this whole period of time, I could either give credit to my Clarisonic, or simply just growing out of my hormonal, teenage acne. In addition to clearing up my skin, I have noticed such an improvement with my skin texture, including minimized pores and a smoother feel. This fancy gadget is my number one skincare recommendation and I can never see myself stop using it.

Down to the Details
There are four different types of Clarisonic's you can purchase: the original Clarisonic Plus, the Clarisonic Mia, the Clarisonic Mia 2, and the Clarisonic Aria. The Clarisonic Plus is a bigger version of the Mia and has three different speeds. The Clarisonic cleanses with a vibrating motion, and having the different speeds just means you can get a deeper cleanse, I am assuming. In addition, you can mount a body cleansing brush head onto the Clarisonic Plus, which you are not able to do with the Mia's. The Clarisonic Mia is a more travel friendly size and only has one speed. I purchased the Clarisonic Mia because it is cheaper in price, more compact, and has more color options to choose from. Since purchasing the Mia, they have brought out the Mia 2, which has two different speeds. Though the two speeds would be nice, I have seen excellent results just from using one speed. I know very little about the Clarisonic Aria, other then that it is bigger than the Mia's and has 3 speeds. As for prices, the Clarisonic Mia retails for $119, the Mia 2 $149, the Clarisonic Aria $199, and the Clarisonic Plus $225.

Replacement Brush Heads
For obvious sanitary reasons, you must replace your Clarisonic brush heads every 3 months. Personally, I replace my brush head when it starts to look like it needs to be replaced. I use my own judgement, and usually when the brush heads looks pretty yellow, I know it's time. There are 6 different brush heads to choose from: normal, sensitive skin, delicate skin, deep pore, acne cleansing, and the body brush head. The brush heads are pretty self explanatory and I have tried the brush heads for sensitive skin, acne cleansing, and normal skin. To be honest, I didn't notice a huge difference between them all besides the fact that the normal brush head wasn't as soft, a little more abrasive. For that reason, I am going to go back to the sensitive brush head that I have used since the beginning. I think I would like to purchase the deep pore cleansing brush head in the future, not for an everyday cleanse, but just to exfoliate once in a while. Now, these brush heads make the upkeep of the Clarisonic pretty pricey. You can purchase one of these brush heads for $25, a two pack for $40, or a four pack for $75. Next time, I will be purchasing the four pack because you basically get the fourth brush head free.

I know the price of the Clarisonic is pretty steep, but I personally see it as an investment. Clear skin is something everyone strives for, and I know I can use my Clarisonic for years to come. Other brands have brought out similar concepts to the Clarisonic, but I think the quality of the Clarisonic is the best. Like I said, I have had mine for 2 years and have yet to have a problem with it. If you are having issues with your skin, I think the Clarisonic is a skincare miracle that any gender and age can benefit from.

My Travel Make-up Bag: Palm Springs Edition

So for my trip to Palm Springs, I spent the majority of my time in my swimsuit, although, I had to bring make-up for when we went out at night. You know how it is...
My make-up bag is from Forever 21, which I find has the cutest make-up pouches! They always have to have them displayed while you're in the line, and I can never resist. This one has a cute black and white striped design and has the perfect shape. With the exception of the palette, it fits everything in there with minimal brush smushing.

For face, I brought a sample of MAC's Face and Body foundation. I am a firm believer in sampling out foundations before purchasing, and I have recently been testing out this one. They really give you a generous sample and this one lasted me a little over a week of use. As for my opinions on it so far, it is very light coverage and leaves your skin with a dewy glow. I think this is a great foundation for summer because it looks so natural on the skin, but stay away from it if you have oily skin or need fuller coverage. To cover spots, I brought my MAC Studio Finish concealer and for underneath the eyes, I brought the Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch concealer. For powder I brought the Hourglass Ambient Light Powder in the shade Diffused Light. I am still testing this out, but I brought this along because it gets rid of the shine, but still keeps the skin looking completely natural. Of course, I had to bring my favorite bronzer ever, which is my Too Faced Chocolate Soleil bronzer in the shade Milk Chocolate. This bronzer is perfect for my skin tone and I love the fact that it's matte...and smells like chocolate. For blush, I brought Immortal Flower by MAC for the perfect light peach flush.

As for eyes, I had to bring my MAC palette because I do not have any smaller form of carrying around my eyeshadows. I need to invest in a quad from MAC because carrying around the whole palette, when I really only need a couple shades, is not practical for travel. For primer, I brought my MAC paint pot in the shade Rubenesque. This is one of my favorite products for summer because it is a beautiful shade on its own or under other eyeshadows and it doesn't budge. As for eyeliner and mascara, I stuck with my favorites, which are the Maybelline Colossal Cat Eye's mascara and the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner (spot feature on this coming very soon). My Shiseido eyelash curler had to come along as well.

For lips, I stuck with the essentials. I brought my absolute favorite Jack Black lip balm with much needed SPF! The Black Tea & Blackberry flavor (or scent?) is my favorite. For a little bit of color and moisture, I brought the YSL Volupte Sheer Candy in shade two, which I believe is named "Juicy Papaya".

I will keep this short and just list the brushes I brought. For face, I brought my beauty blender, MAC 138 & 116, and my Real Techniques Blush Brush, which is my favorite brush for bronzer. For eyes, I brought the MAC 217 & 239. I honestly could have done fine with just the 217 because I didn't do any extensive eyeshadow looks. I also brought along my eyebrow spoolie/brush combo and my eco tools detail brush specifically for that inner corner highlight.
